AU Deals: Price-Cut Party With Nintendo Classics and Next-Gen Heavyweights

Some sales make me wince with buyer’s remorse, others make me wonder if the publishers are playing a long game of price limbo. Right now though, I’m looking at a set of discounts that feel almost too good to pass up. If you love keeping your library stacked with proven hits and cult favourites, this deceptively idle Tuesday is actually an absolute treat.

This Day in Gaming 🎂

In retro news, I’m using a Space Pirate plasma blast to light 15 candles on a cake baked for Metroid: Other M, that polarising third-person action entry that tried to morph[ball] together side-scrolling heritage with Team Ninja’s cinematic flair. Back in 2010, the promise of a more story-driven Samus adventure got me amped. On paper, that sounded like a dream; in practice, Other M split the room.

The combat system was fluid and punchy, blending first-person aiming with fast-paced melee, but the heavy-handed script and rigid command structure rubbed a lot of longtime fans the wrong way. It might not have stuck the landing, but it remains a conversation piece in Metroid history.

Aussie birthdays for notable games.

Nice Savings for Nintendo Switch

On Switch, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate remains my go-to party starter. The fact that it houses characters like Solid Snake and Banjo-Kazooie is a licensing miracle, and the multi never gets old (with the right people). Sonic Frontiers, meanwhile, had me sceptical until I learned Yuji Naka originally envisioned Sonic in more open spaces back in the 90s. Seeing that dream finally realised, even imperfectly, is worth celebrating.

  • Super Smash Bros. Ult. (-23%) A$69 A party fighter that thrives on chaos, endless DLC fighters, and that smug mate who only plays as Kirby.
  • Donkey Kong Country Returns (-20%) A$64 A remastered romp with barrel-blasting and banana-hoarding mayhem. Still tough as nails in parts.
  • Mario Kart 8 Del. (-15%) A$68 The kart racer that will ruin friendships and ignite couch rivalries.
  • Sonic Frontiers (-40%) A$59.90 Sega’s blue blur goes semi-open world. Not perfect, but the sense of speed and scale hits nicely.
  • Catherine: Full Body (-25%) A$59.80 Puzzle climbing meets surreal love triangle drama. Stylish, odd, and unforgettable.
  • Minecraft Legends Del. (-15%) A$64 Action-strategy spin-off with familiar voxels. A lighter RTS approach to the Minecraft universe.

Exciting Bargains for Xbox

Over on Series X, Gotham Knights is far from flawless but it shines in co-op. What surprised me most is how much of its narrative DNA was lifted directly from Scott Snyder’s Court of Owls comics run. Immortals Fenyx Rising also deserves a look, especially if you love Greek mythology. Ubisoft snuck in a few lesser-known myths alongside the usual Zeus gags, and I got hooked chasing down those references.

  • Prince of Persia The Lost Crown (-65%) A$20.90 A stylish metroidvania revival with fluid combat and time powers. Worthwhile at this low.
  • Gotham Knights (-73%) A$29.90 Be the Bat-family, not the Bat. Mixed reviews, but coop crime fighting is good fun.
  • Suicide Squad: KTJL Del. (-76%) A$39.90 Rocksteady’s chaotic shooter with familiar villains. Not for everyone, but deep discounts tempt.
  • Dragon Age Veilguard Del. (-76%) A$33 BioWare’s newest epic entry. If you’re curious about the series’ direction, now’s a cheap entry point.
  • Immortals Fenyx Rising (-80%) A$11.90 Ubisoft’s Breath of the Wild-inspired adventure. Funny narration and mythic puzzles galore.

Xbox One

  • South Park: The Fractured but Whole (-80%) A$9.80 A foul-mouthed RPG sequel. More deliciously crass humour, surprisingly strong combat systems.
  • Watch Dogs: Legion (-90%) A$9.90 Hack London as literally anyone. Mixed reception, but at this price it’s practically free.
  • Assassin’s Creed Valhalla (-80%) A$19.90 Viking-era Assassin’s Creed with a huge map and meaty side quests.

Or just invest in an Xbox Card.

Pure Scores for PlayStation

PS5 has Dead Space, which remains one of the finest remakes I’ve ever played. The decision to give Isaac a voice, years after the silent original, adds so much weight to his breakdowns. Tekken 8 also earns its place here today, and I highly recommend its brand of fisticuffs for stress relief.

  • 40K Space Marine 2 (-50%) A$53.90 Ultraviolent hack-and-slash action with Warhammer flavour. Big guns, bigger aliens.
  • Dead Space (-80%) A$21.90 A terrifyingly good remake. Claustrophobic corridors, grotesque necromorphs, and polished visuals.
  • Tekken 8 (-24%) A$64.90 The King of Iron Fist returns. Gorgeous visuals and refined fighting mechanics.
  • Stranger of Paradise: FF Origin (-62%) A$37.60 A gruff, meme-worthy retelling of Final Fantasy origins. Jarring tone but fun combat.
  • WWE 2K25 (-51%) A$59 Grapple, suplex, and body slam. Latest entry is content-rich and performance-polished.

PS4

  • Dragon Ball Fighterz (-53%) A$47 ArcSys’ 3v3 anime fighter. Gorgeous visuals and frantic combat.
  • Phoenix Wright Trilogy (-67%) A$14.80 Classic courtroom adventures. Objections never looked this crisp.
  • South Park: TFBW (-80%) A$7.90 A superhero parody RPG with fart-powered combat.

Purchase Cheap for PC

On PC, Baldur’s Gate 3 is as essential as it gets. Larian’s attention to detail is absurd, right down to the fact you can romance a vampire who offers to bite you mid-camp. Into the Breach, meanwhile, proves that lightning can strike twice for Subset Games, the same folks who gave us FTL. It’s chess with kaiju, and I dig it.

  • Baldur’s Gate 3 (-25%) A$67.40 Critically acclaimed RPG with near-infinite choice and consequence. A modern classic.
  • Persona 5 Royal (-60%) A$37.90 Stylish turn-based JRPG dripping with personality and life sim elements.
  • Into the Breach (-80%) A$4.30 Chess-like tactical battles with giant mechs. Perfect for quick-hit strategy sessions.
  • AC Valhalla Comp. (-80%) A$41.90 Every expansion bundled with the Viking epic. Hundreds of hours of content.
  • The Invincible (-60%) A$17.90 A retro sci-fi narrative adventure. Atmospheric and cerebral, based on Stanisław Lem’s novel.
